Public housing starts in San Fernando for the first time in 12 years

After more than 12 years of downtime and another two years of preliminary procedures, work on the construction of public housing in San Fernando has finally begun again. Moreover, although we are talking only about the construction of 15 rental houses, this is already an event.

The mayor of the island, Patricia Cavada, announced during her visit to the start-up site on Calle Alcedo about the start of public housing projects for the city, which will be accompanied not only by the construction of new housing but also by other strategies and formats aimed at developing infrastructure.

Although small for the municipal company, the Alcedo development represents a long-awaited turning point for the resumption of public housing after too long a hiatus caused by the crisis and the disappearance of state and regional aid in this area.

The island councillor noted that the housing problem is one of the main problems facing any region or city. “The authorities regularly face dramatic situations where many people cannot access housing. Furthermore, we are talking about the most vulnerable families in need of social protection and about people who have a regular income but have to spend more than 80% of it on paying for housing. Finding affordable rental housing is extremely difficult, and that is why we must involve the administration in solving this problem. As for the San Fernando government, we will do our utmost to alleviate the needs of the city’s residents for affordable housing.”

The action, co-financed from state and regional funds, began with the demolition of 6 residential buildings that Esisa had already renovated to start new construction. As a result, 15 new homes will be built, provided to Esisa users on a lease basis.
