Germany, France and the UK dominate the overseas search for housing in Spain

Users looking for a home on Idealista, the main real estate market in Spain, Italy and Portugal, are still attracted to the Spanish coast. Despite restrictions on movement between countries due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Idealista portal continues to provide high data on the number of interested foreign citizens or Spaniards living in other countries.

As of the end of the second quarter of 2021, the latest data show that 11.3% of the sale and lease deals of the Spanish real estate market are related to foreigners. This is 7.7 percentage points less than it was recorded at the beginning of last summer.

According to the Idealista report, the majority of housing searches in coastal cities of Spain in 2021 are divided between residents of Germany, France and the UK.

  • In fact, German citizens predominate in most places (218), especially on the Valencian coast and both archipelagos.
  • They are followed by representatives of France (130) on the Catalan and Basque coasts.
  • Representatives of Great Britain (129) are interested in Costa Blanca, Murcia and Andalusia in general.

After these three countries, citizens from the United States, Italy and Switzerland show their interest in buying or renting the Spanish housing. Residents of the world's largest economies prefer the coast of Cantabria, from Italy — the islands, and Swiss citizens prefer Galician municipalities, probably because of Spanish immigration to Switzerland. Spaniards abroad are also looking for homes in their native places to return there or find a second home.

British citizens are looking for housing to buy or rent it in the northern provinces of Spain, near the Atlantic Ocean and the Cantabrian Sea. Although users from Switzerland or the United States are interested in the Galician provinces. The French dominate in Gipuzkoa, and the Germans and the British — in Vizcaya. In Asturias, the main search queries come from the United States, and in Cantabria —from Germany.
