After a decade, Nerja City Council is returning to social housing development

The Russian-Ukrainian conflict has caused inflation to rise at an unpredictable pace in Spain in the last three decades. All economic sectors came under siege. Neglect is obvious even in projects under government tenders in every economic sector.

Nerja City Council was forced to pay attention to the problem of social housing in the city. It becomes highly relevant in the current situation. The municipal authorities have started reviewing the basic budget for the construction of 11 social housing projects (note: subsidized housing/VPO). It was decided that these projects would be rented out after the idea of selling them turned out to be unpopular.

In Nerja, this is the first state’s attempt at social housing construction in the last ten years. The city authorities approved a new budget for the construction of 11 homes, neighbouring parking spaces, warehouses, and other facilities for €1,460,000. The houses are designed to be rented out to young people. The project is located on Zurbarán Street.

Nieves Atencia, Urban Planning and Housing Advisor, announced in a press release: “The project's attractiveness has been greatly reduced as a result of the ongoing rise in the procurement value of building materials. But the City Council reacted quickly by updating the terms of the economic component of the building plan in order to put projects out to tender and attract more offers from real estate developers.

All 11 rental houses are a part of the large "Municipal Youth Housing Project" plan, a section of "Economic and Tourism Measure No. 5" of the municipal shock action plan developed during the coronavirus crisis.

The project was approved by the People's Party (PP) political party. María Nieves Atencia Fernández is an active member of this party. The project was also approved by the "Citizens" (Ciudadanos), "Together we can" (Unidas Podemos), and "Voice" (Vox) parties. The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and José Garcia, "independent adviser", abstained.
