Aedas Homes: every third Spaniard plans not to buy, but to rent a house

In Spain, the culture of renting housing is gradually being formed. Currently, more than a third of Spaniards are considering renting rather than buying as a permanent residence, the Aedas Homes observatory found in July 2021. This study is aimed at better understanding the demand for housing, and almost 4,000 people were interviewed in the country. For the first time, there were the questions about happiness, digitalization and sustainable development to assess their impact on the decision to buy a house.

The housing market is developing rapidly, and long-term rental is becoming more and more popular. 34.3% of Aedas observatory respondents currently consider renting as an option for permanent residence. This view is shared by:

  • 29.1% of young people,
  • 36.7% of people aged 36 to 50 years,
  • 34.2% of people aged from 51 to 65 years.

By living in rented housing, the regions were divided as follows:

  • Galicians (42%),
  • Catalans and Balearics (40% in both cases),
  • Residents of Castilla-La Mancha (26%).

"Despite the fact that society in Spain increasingly prefers renting to buying a house, the opinion that this type of housing is temporary is still very strong. 65.7% of young people surveyed believe that this may be due to a higher level of happiness for those who live in their own home," the Aedas Homes study says.
