Spanish Education System

The Spanish education system is organized as follows:

  1. Elementary school is for children 6–12 years old. Like secondary school, it is a compulsory level of education for all children, Spaniards and foreigners residing permanently in the country;
  2. Middle school is for adolescents of 13–16 years old;
  3. High school (bachillerato) is for adolescents of 16–18 years old who plan to go to university. For the rest, this level of education is optional.

The British Council School, ranking among the top 15 best schools in Spain, provides students with knowledge of two languages – Spanish and English. The institution is affiliated with the official agency that promotes British culture and learning system, and gives its students the opportunity to participate in international cultural events. There is also a kindergarten. Tuition costs from €2,300 to €4,250 per semester.

The cost of apartments in Spain depends on the area and location. In general, Madrid is one of the most expensive cities in Spain. Currently, there are the following residential properties for sale in the city:

Schools in the province of Alicante

International schools in Alicante

Costs of education in the following educational establishments in the province of Alicante are calculated individually. In order to clarify it, contact the institution administration.

  1. The King's College in Alicante offers British education programmes. Lessons are taught in both English and Spanish.

    Children between the ages of 3 and 18 attend the college. About 15% of the students are foreigners. The school is tolerant of students of any faith and nationality. A large number of extra-curricular activities are offered.

  2. Liceo Frances in Alicante is attended by children between 3 and 18 years old. Classes are in Spanish and French. Additionally, students also study other European languages, including English. Approximately 65% of the students are Spanish, the rest are French or belong to other countries. Notably, children under 14 do not need to speak French at the time of enrolment. Graduates take the Spanish Unified National Exam and receive Spanish and French certificates.

  3. The European School in Alicante is attended by students aged between 4 and 18. Children study Spanish, English, German, and French. Of course, classes are conducted in compliance with the educational standard of the European Union. The graduates receive European standard documents – a Baccalaureate diploma – and may go on to higher education institutions of any EU country.

  4. Lady Elizabeth School in Benitatxell (junior high school here) and Lliber (high school here) is considered one of the best educational institutions in Spain and is under the patronage of the British Royal Court. The international educational programme, practiced here, is used in almost 2,000 educational institutions in 90 countries of the world. The main goal of the programme is to teach children to gain academic knowledge with pleasure.

  5. The main feature of the English School de Mutxamel in Mutxamel is small groups of 15 students. Children from 3 to 18 years old study here. As for lessons, they are taught in English and Spanish. The main place in the curriculum used in the institution is occupied by learning the history and culture of Spain and Great Britain.

  6. Lessons in Laude Newton College in Elche are conducted in English and Spanish. There are science laboratories, computer labs, a library, and soccer, volleyball and basketball grounds here. Moreover, high school students have practical training in specialized companies. But most importantly, the graduates get an international Baccalaureate diploma.

  7. Costa Blanca International College in Benidorm is attended by children between 3 and 18 years old. Graduates receive two diplomas – Spanish and British, as all subjects are taught in these languages. Students who plan to continue their studies in Spanish universities take a unified state exam after they turn 16.

  8. Phoenix International English School of the international level is located in San Miguel de Salinas, 15 km from the center of Torrevieja. The educational institution is attended by children aged between 3 and 16 years old. Similarly to the above mentioned schools, education here is based on the British system and is taught in English and Spanish. A child can spend a trial day in the institution, after which parents will decide whether or not to enroll them in the school. There will be a fee of €500 for admission. It is also necessary to pay a deposit of €575 in case of sudden problems with tuition fees.

The fixed tuition fee is:

  • for preschool groups: €520 per month or €5,200 per year;
  • for elementary school: €545 per month or €5,450 per year;
  • for high school: €575 per month or €5,750 per year.

You can pay for primary and secondary school tuition in a different way. The cost of tuition in this case depends on the number of subjects chosen.

Each elementary school class has no more than 15 students, and the high school class has no more than 18 students, as it allows teachers to practice an individual approach to each student. Close attention is paid to discipline; thus, for example, teachers do not allow bullying of children by classmates.

Prices for residential properties in this province, on average, significantly lower than in Madrid or Barcelona:

  • a great 230 m2 apartment with three bedrooms – €230,000;
  • a 250 m2 residence with four bedrooms – €950,000;
  • a larger 325 m2 apartment with six bedrooms – €4.5 million;
  • a villa of 910 m2 with five bedrooms – €4.8 million;

Schools in Valencia

Valencia has many private and public schools. Every year, the local education department compiles a list of the best public secondary schools. The cost of education in some of them is calculated individually. There are some of the schools that regularly make the list, with the first three being elementary schools:

  1. Cervantes School offers many extracurricular activities in addition to regular classes. A special feature of this school is that the association of teachers and parents of the school can help to pay for extracurricular classes for low-income families. To find out about tuition prices, you need to contact the administration of the school.

  2. At Jaime Balmes, classes are taught primarily in Valencian. There is an emphasis on a healthy lifestyle. For example, PE teachers teach a variety of programmes that promote good health. Moreover, teachers develop options for joint home activities for children and parents. Of course, the staff of the institution cares about proper nutrition for the students. Additionally, many parents work with teachers to organize children's birthday parties, carnivals, and other celebrations.

  3. CEIP Lluis Vive emphasizes music instruction. Lessons are taught in different languages: 42% of subjects are in Valencian, 38% are in Spanish, 20% are art, drawing, music and English. The school has its own radio station and soccer team. The money received for the children's tuition is used to organize excursions and parties.

  4. Mas Camarena has its own soccer fields, playgrounds for younger students, recreational areas, park, and outdoor swimming pool, in addition to its academic buildings. There are robotics and programming classes, with an average class consisting of 21 students. This school is certified by Apple. Similarly, subjects are taught in both Spanish and English. Mas Camarena is considered the best school in Valencia. Actually, this school includes four IB (International Baccalaureate) programmes. Most of the students are Spanish, followed by Americans and the Chinese. Tuition costs are negotiated with the administration.
